justtakemetothemusicalready The whole production feels like a good soundtrack to a video game. If a person knows desert blues music from the Sahara, the work only gets more interesting! Favorite track: Into the Desert Beyond.

about

This mixtape was written as a world-building project for Gunpowder Tea, a video game that I began drafting for original Game Boy in the fall of 2019. That original demo is available and playable here: a-study-in-expression.itch.io/gunpowder-tea

The game was originally made using a free software, called GB Studio, but I ran into people who wanted to help modernize the project. This music is written to follow the cues of the demo.:

I have no idea if the game will ever reach completion, since all members working on it have other jobs and such. But I'm hopeful! We'll just keep making progress.

The plot, world, and music are obvious homages to the wondrous music and cultures of Saharan Africa - especially Hamza El Din, Mdou Moctar, Noura Mint Seymali, and Tinariwen - hence the names of the places and characters. I certainly hope none of it comes off as inappropriate or rude to these peoples.

If we ever reach the point to where the game is in proper production, my hope is to record the instruments live, like a concert (or at least largely live). This mixtape was recorded in 2020, so obviously not possible.

Though there is no budget or plan for it, I would love to release this as a 7" with a little booklet and/or map, as an homage to the original Game Boy title it was. Even if the project never goes further than these things, I'm proud.
